The US Sailing
Spring Meeting was held in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 13-16,
2003. At the Awards Dinner held on Saturday night March 15, 2003, Cedar
Point Yacht Club received the US Sailing One Design Class Council Club
Award. The remarks made at the Awards Dinner were as follows:
Patty
Lawrence, One Design Class Council Chairman (and an active Thistle
Sailor
from South Carolina) began her remarks by indicating that the One
Design
Class Club Award recognizes administrative excellence, fleet growth,
creative
programming, regatta support, member contribution -- at regional,
national
and international levels -- of the one-design yacht club of the
year.
Patty then announced Cedar Point Yacht Club as the 2002 Winner and
recapped
the accomplishments of Cedar Point in being selected for the 2002
Club
Award. Her remarks were extensive, citing many of the Regatta
activities
of the Club in 2002. After reading the extensive list of the
Club's
accomplishments, she made special note of the impressive volunteer
involvement
in Race Management at Cedar Point, the dedication the Club had
shown
in developing fully the One Design Concept through supporting its wide
variety
of One Design Fleets, the Club's contributions in developing the
Connecticut
Special Olympics Sailing Program and the development of the High
School
Sailing Program at CPYC. She ended her remarks by indicating that
the
activities at Cedar Point in 2002 were most impressive and worthy of
recognition.
Dave Rosekrans, President of US Sailing then presented the
2002
One Design Club Award to Cedar Point Yacht Club, indicating that one of
the
best parts of his job was being able to recognize great Sailing
accomplishments
such as this.
Patty then introduced Rear Commodore Ed Rickard and 2003 Race and Regatta
Chairman
Nelson Stephenson who accepted the One Design Club Award on behalf
of Cedar
Point Yacht Club.
Ed Rickard
thanked US Sailing for selecting
Cedar Point as the recipient of the 2002 One
Design Club Award and indicated what a great
honor it was for our Club. Ed also indicated that
<== Note the nice CPYC ties!!!
it was
a great pleasure for him to accept the
2003 One Design Club award on behalf of the
Board of Governors, Members and Staff of
Cedar Point Yacht Club. Ed then introduced
Nelson Stephenson.
Nelson
indicated that the 2002 Club Award would not have been possible
without the tremendous support and enthusiasm of the entire Membership
and Staff of Cedar Point Yacht Club. Nelson also indicated that the tremendous
racing season that the Club experienced in 2002 was in large measure due
to
the Leadership provided by the Club's Board of Governors, its present
Commodore Mark Foster, its past Commodore Tom Little, the 2002 Race and
Regatta Chairman Charlie Kreitler, the 2002 Governor in Charge of Racing
Rich Gold and the extensive efforts and support of Michael Colnes and many
other dedicated volunteers. Nelson ended his brief remarks by inviting
everyone present to come to Westport CT and experience a weekend of One
Design Racing at Cedar Point and find out first hand what a great Club
and
facility our Board of Governors and Membership have built over the years.

The Cedar Point

114-year tradition
of providing top-quality racing at regional, national and
international
racing. They run a comprehensive program of club racing,
frostbite races,
and a variety of open and invitational regattas. In 2002,
the 300-member
club ran over 600 races as part of 54 different series.
Participation
in racing and race management is at the core of Cedar Point’s
culture. They
set high standards for race administration for all races. All
club members
receive race management training. At major regattas they have
30 or more volunteers
assisting on the water, which is 10% of their
membership.
While they have no dining rooms or swimming pools, they can
manage a one-design
championship regatta of over 100 boats. Cedar Point
Yacht Club takes
its mission as a one-design racing club seriously.
