The Cedar Point Laser Fleet runs a program of summer racing and winter frostbiting. As many sailors, and all of our Frostbiters, already know, Lasers are terrific boats to sail. The sailors in our fleet span a tremendous range of ages and skills, we have near beginners, hotshot juniors, Olympic racers and graying grandmasters competing.
The Laser has an extremely strong one design class association with over 190,000 Lasers worldwide and standing as an Olympic Class. For many people, the Laser is truly the perfect single-handed one design. These factors along with the Laser's low cost, ease of rigging, excitement of the sailing, and the close competition and comraderie in our fleet are why many of our club members who own and race other boats still find much of their best racing is in Lasers.
Frostbiting begins the second Sunday in October and runs through the middle of December; it resumes the second Sunday in March and continues through to middle of May. With well over 100 boats registered for the frostbiting season, 40 to 60 Lasers, a mix of both standard and Radial rigs, come out to race on a typical Sunday. Racing is open to all and Winter Membership is available at a relatively low fee without any lengthy application process. Just come down and sign up! And getting to know and sail with us in the winter is a great way to see if Cedar Point is the right club for you for the summer too.
CPYC also has Laser racing in the summer on the three holiday weekends and CPYC Laser fleet members are regularly traveling to Laser regattas at venues near and far with our 6-boat fleet trailer. See the links at left for Results, Notice of Race and contact info for our Fleet Captain.
My name is Joseph Nice and I am your new fleet captain. I’ve only been on the job for a little while now, so I’m a still new to the process and am excited about the season ahead – as I hope you are!
I’m reaching out to you all to say “Hi, Welcome and Let’s have an awesome season.” I really look forward to sailing with you and learning from each other on how to be better sailors. The season kicked off to a great start with 2 beautiful weekends in very different conditions.
I know we all have a lot going on these days, but it’s important to remember that this fleet is for YOU by YOU and I welcome your ideas and input. Volunteers are our lifeblood that keep the fleet alive and kicking.
I’m giving you the opportunity to step forward and be an active member of the collective; if my pleas for action go un-noticed then I’ll be forced to open up a can of Eric Robbins!
So, if you have an interest in helping organize the fall and spring regattas or would like to take photos or keep a weekly laser journal to be shared with the fleet, please email me. I’d love to hear from you! And let’s not forget that publicity of the fleet is in all our hands. Talk us up to your friends, family and acquaintances. Bring a friend for a free trial day or to help out with Race Committee – get ‘em involved! Just get the word out – We’re here, we’re fun, come sail!!!
See you all on Sunday
