All returning non-member sailors may begin registration on February 17, 2012 , and all non-member sailors who are new to the program may begin registration on March 7, 2012. The program will run Monday, June 25 - Friday, August 17, 2012. All courses are available for 4 or 8 weeks. 4 week course is available for first 4 weeks only. Morning Classes (all Optimists): 8:30 AM – Noon, Monday- Friday
1 . Optimist Beginner and Intermediate: For first and second year sailors 8 to 14 years of age. Grouped by age and experience level. Each child sails his or her own 8 ft, single sail, Optimist dinghy. CPYC has 4 Optis available for charter and can put you in touch with other charters. Many families purchase their own boats.
2. Advanced Optimist : For more advanced Opti sailors 9 to 14 years of age who are ready to focus on racing. Requires approval by Head Instructor and requires at least 16 weeks prior sailing experience. Almost all sailors own their boats.
Afternoon Classes (Pixels, 420s and Laser Standard/Radial): 1:00 - 5:00 PM, Monday-Friday
1. Pixel: Good transition boat between Opti and more advanced 420/Laser. For intermediate sailors 11 to 18 years of age. 2 person, 14 ft. boat with main sail, jib and spinnaker. CPYC has 2 club Pixels for charter. Others are privately owned.
2. Junior 420: For sailors 13 to 18 years of age who are less experienced than the Racing 420 sailors, are not yet JSA age 14, not eligible for Racing 420s or who do not want to race. 2 person, 14 ft boat with main sail, jib, spinnaker and trapeze. CPYC has 6 club 420s available for charter. Some are privately owned. Junior 420 class may be combined with Racing 420 class, depending on enrollment numbers.
3. Racing 420: For sailors 14 to 18 years of age with prior experience in Opti, Pixel, Laser or similar boat and who meet JSA age/weight requirements. Same boats as Junior 420, but this class focuses on racing.
4. Laser Standard/Radial: For sailors 14 to 18 years of age with prior experience in Opti, Pixel, Laser or similar boat and who meet JSA age/weight requirements. 1 person, 14 ft boat. Laser Standards/Radials are taught together. Choice depends on sailor’s size and experience--Radial has smaller sail area and is more appropriate for juniors in 100- 150 lb weight range. Standard is for larger, more experienced sailors.
